Science Outreach to Schools (SoS, www.sosindia.net) started from a lunchtime discussion between graduates of the University of Cambridge (the core team), who collectively recognised the need for inspiring school children to explore their talent at crucial turning points of their years in formal education and consider opportunities in research and innovation. The target audience of SoS are high school students studying in classes IX to XII (14 – 17 years age group) from both English and vernacular media government and private schools. Since it’s inception in 2013, SoS has provided a platform for interaction between more than 20 leading scientists from across the globe and nearly 500 students from 40 schools across metropolitan, urban and rural settings in India.
A typical SoS event comprises a day of talks by leading experts and young upcoming scientists, virtual tour of a world class institution, team science activity, informal networking opportunities and a panel discussion. All these elements are designed to introduce to students how scientific temperament, critical thinking and interdisciplinary approach are employed in research and technology to find solutions to real world problems and challenges.
