I thoroughly enjoyed an impromptu SoS session with my nieces, nephews and their friends! I shared the history of the discovery of DNA structure and a brief introduction to the technique of X-ray crystallography. Next we extracted DNA from banana and the kids were able to carry a sample back home. Such a pleasure to share the fun part of science! In turn was also amazed by their questions about life as a researcher, about career paths and about work life balance. Students today as such well informed and mature already.
Five cheers for my aunts for being such a big sport and participating with the crowd in the DNA extraction activity! Especially Jyoti Mami for the Sherlock type questions about DNA and the experiment itself ;). I would also like to thank the Engineers in the group, Apurva Rathi and Neha Tanna, for being a part of the gang and finding some time for us amidst your short visit. And of course this wouldn't be possible without the highly infectious enthusiasm of my parents and sister, Ketki Borkar! Event management is always a great family exercise. It was indeed an incredible way to wrap up the 2017 trip back home and I am already looking forward to the next one!
